We're nearing the halfway point of the Summer movie rush, and what have you gone out to see so far? Maybe you happened upon "The Happening" and are praying M. Night is finally done for. Or saw "The Incredible Hulk" and forgot all about that emotional crapfest Ang Lee gave us. Well we've had some good and bad already but there's much more ahead....

JULY 11TH Hellboy 2 - I enjoyed the first one despite it not being a big hit. It's nice to see a non-Marvel or DC comic making it at the movies. They create nice plot lines and very different characters to work with, and what else would you see this weekend?

Meet Dave - Is Eddie Murphy still funny? Give me Charlie Murphy any day.

Journey To The Center of the Earth 3D - I just saw this trailer two days ago, and cried. How far does this former comedian have to go? Oh wait, there's another Mummy movie coming soon (ALSO SEE PART 2 OF PREVIEW).

JULY 18TH
The Dark Knight - Ah, my most anticipated movie. And that was long before Heath Ledger's death. I knew he was going to pull off the dark vision of the Joker that Jack Nicholson camped up in the original version. Don't get me wrong, he was great ("Where does he get those wonderful toys?") but I need the insane darkness of the man who killed the second Robin. A complete psychopath, and Harvey Dent on top of it. Nice foreshadowing on his bit with the line, "Some of us die as heroes, and others live long enough to see ourselves become villians".

Mamma Mia! - ABBA on the big screen and while the band is actually on tour (I think...). With the success of "Hairspray" last year, this one might just pull it off as well but opening against Batman will be really tough to get through.

Lou Reed's Berlin - One of the famed Lou Reed concerts, on the big screen. If you love music, this is a must.

Space Chimps - Going to be the greatest movie of the summer, just you wait. Monkeys in space, need I say more. How about the voice of Brock Samson?

JULY 25TH
American Teen - A poignant presentation of high school teens (there's a cliche here) set in a similar style to "The Breakfast Club" without John Hughes 80's comedy. There will be a jock, princess, criminal, misfit, and geek love triangle thing I'm sure.

Step Brothers - Will Ferrel? And he's not doing a sports movie?!? How about we throw in John C. Reilly for good measure? Nothing will top "A Night At The Roxbury" for me.

X-files 2 - Buy a billboard, and they'll make a movie. The only reason for this movie is fans started buying billboard space to advertise this flick, and higher-ups saw the demand thus bringing the classic show to the big screen again. Not a huge fan of the show so doubt this will be on my list.

AUGUST 1ST
The Mummy: TTOTDE - I never even liked the first one and now we're on number 4? Least this one will have Jet Li to kick Brendan's ass around a bunch of times.

The Rocker - I've been waiting for Rainn Wilson to make a bigger appearance on the movie screen again ever since his brief scene in "Juno". Here's top the naked drummer.

AUGUST 8TH
The Pineapple Express - The big comedy of the summer in my humble opinion. Hopefully a masterful blend of Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Half Baked.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 - Didn't see the first, won't see the second.

Fly Me To The Moon - Animated flies aboard the space shuttle who look and act remarkably like Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Hell Ride - Quentin Tarantino's back! Or at least presenting his spaghetti western flick. After the success of Kill Bill, this idea's been circulating the internet boards.

AUGUST 15TH
Tropic Thunder - Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr., black? This could be a real hit or miss movie.

Star Wars (Animated) - Admit it....as much as you groaned about this being made, you'll still be first in line to see it. My only comment is when will Lucas cut the crap and make the movies we want to see? The end trilogy! The complaint is the original actors will be too old to fit the roles yet Harrison Ford still passes as Indy? Also there are other actors on this planet and it wouldn't be the first movie to change the actor playing the main role (strong rumor Tobey is getting replaced for "Spiderman 4").

AUGUST 22ND
Hamlet 2 - There is no other movie this weekend. Steve Coogan is awesome. Go see "24 Hour Party People" and tell me otherwise. So go see Hamlet 2 and rock me sexy Jesus!

AUGUST 29TH
Disaster Movie - You can tell the end of the summer season when they start releasing these bad parody movies. Didn't "Epic Movie" teach them anything about how sick we are of these flicks? Doesn't even come close to touching "Naked Gun" or "Airplane."

Now pick your movies wisely this summer. Ticket prices are going through the roof plus gas ain't cheap so don't flush your money down the toilet with the rest of the crap this summer.

First of all, I'll get this out of the way. Fuck every single one of those critics who bashed "Speed Racer" which was almost every single one. I don't recommend the movie for everyone to see but if you were a fan of the cartoon, then I think you should be pleased. Plot-more than the show at times. The special effects may be candy-coated over the top eye-popping but so was the cartoon (for the time it came out). It's supposed to look like a cartoon world, that's what they were trying to achieve. All of the actors did very well, except Susan Saran-wrap. But I think the worst part was the re-vamped theme song, so it gets my vote of approval. Now onto the rest of the summer....

MAY 2ND
Iron Man - Saw this opening night, and will probably see it again. It's a very comic accurate movie with great actors throughout the whole movie, and stay till the very end (you know post credits) cos you get an extra scene with a surprise guest. If only he had the line, "Tony, help me get these motherfucking snakes off my motherfucking heli-carrier."

Made Of Honor - This is one of those reasons the movie business is going down the drain. The same old sentimental drip they have to spoon feed you.

MAY 9TH
Speed Racer - SEE ABOVE!

What Happens In Vegas - $5 for anyone who can find
something not annoying about this

What Happens In Vegas - Didn't they already make "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days"? Sure this time it's six months but just means more bad jokes to sit through.

MAY 16TH
Prince Caspian - The first "Chronicles of Narnia" did pretty well, and these are the books I read alot growing up so I'm hoping this one does just as good. The trailers indicate a lot more action than the first movie had, but the same thing occurred with the second "Lord of the Rings" and that was my least favorite.

Son Of Rambow - Two little British boys making their own Rambo movie. Guaranteed their version is better that the last one Stallone just put out.

MAY 23RD
Indiana Jones and TKOTCS - A very big toss up on this one. Trailers seem to be promising but did they have to include that kid from Transformers? And also can a 60 something man still crack his whip like that? Try the latest drug: Whipgra....don't have that same crack in your whip that you had when you were young? Try new Whipgra, and you'll be whipping commies like you used to. Warning: if still whipping after four hours, please seek medical attention.

Postal - Uwe Boll strikes again, nuff said. Shouldn't he be bankrupt by now?

MAY 30TH
The Fall, The Strangers, and Sex In The City - Not looking forward to any of these. Lucky my weekend here is crammed full of more interesting stuff to do than watch Scott Speedman stumble through another shitty performance (even if Liv Tyler is in it, I fell for it once when he tried the same with Kate Beckinsale in "Underworld") and yet another adapt from tv movie. When's the Sopranoes movie? Oh shit, giving them ideas.

JUNE 6TH
You Don't Mess With Zohan - Award goes to worst concept for a movie. Terrorist becomes hair stylist??? Whatever they were smoking, I'd like to have some. Maybe it came from the set of "The Wackness" (SEE PART 2 OF PREVIEWS).

Kung Fu Panda - Typical animated movie from Dreamworks. Draw in the big names and pretty colors to get the kids coming. Luckily I still consider myself a kid and will probably get sucked into this as well.

Stuck - I remember when this story was in the news. Woman hits guy, guy becomes embedded in windshield, girl drives home and passes out drunk. Just to avoid getting in trouble. Ah I love the stupid people in America, and there's plenty to go around. Enough to keep making movies about them.

The Incredible Hulk - Hoping this does prove to be "incredible". After the ultimate stinker of a first movie (I'd think I'd rather watch the original Punisher movie with
Dolph Lundgren), this should be a mass improvement. The Hulk looks better, and a real villian this time. Leave your oversized dogs and fathers with powers very similar to
Absorbing Man at the door please.

The Promotion - "Employee of the Month" wasn't that long ago so why a remake already?

The Happening - M. Night goes on and on and on and on. *Banging head on desk right now*

JUNE 20TH
The Love Guru - Austin Powers is back...as a Hindu guru. He even brought Mini-Me with him. Should be interesting, yes.

Get Smart - Another made from tv movie but one I'm more interested in. I remember when they first mentioned doing this movie, and my boss asked me who would make a good
Maxwell Smart. I said Steve Carell, and boom it happened. I have yet to see any shoe phone use in the trailers but I'm excited. Can't be worse than the original movies they made, no offense to the late Don Adams.

JUNE 27TH
Wall-E - Another kid fest with amazing animation. But being mostly non-verbal, will it hold people's attention?

Wanted - Mark Millar is a genius comic writer so hopefully it will translate well again onto film. However a secret society of assassins with Angelina Jolie, the same actress from "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", talk about typecasting.

JULY 2ND
Hancock - Will Smith, super hero, and they pick this for their 4th of July weekend release?

10) King of New York – Good movie. I like Christopher Walken.

9) Snatch – Some of Brad Pitt’s finer work. Couldn’t really understand a word he said, but it was still a good performance.

8) Serpico – If you’re thinking this one doesn’t fit the category you’re wrong. Wearing a badge doesn’t stop you from being a criminal. This is a great movie, especially because Frank Serpico’s story is a true one.

7) Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels – Dangerous criminals + stupid criminals may be a recipe for disaster, but it makes for a good movie.

6) Pulp Fiction - All-star cast and a plot with lots of twists and turns. I’ve seen this dozens of times and I can still find little things that I’ve never noticed before.

5) The Untouchables – Kevin Costner and Sean Connery are awesome in this movie. It’s a great depiction of the mafia during the mafias hay-day - back when everyone owned a Tommy gun.

4) Donnie Brasco – Most movies where an undercover agent infiltrates the mob is full of suspense – this one takes the cake. Its funny with this film how you start to feel bad for the “bad guy” and begin to dislike the “good guy”.

3) Casino – Very brutal movie that shows how organized crime expanded from New York and Chicago to Las Vegas. Love everything about the movie except the part that takes place in the corn field – I don’t think I’ve watched that entire scene with my eyes open, ever.

2) The Departed – In my opinion, this is a modern classic. It’s one of those movies where the good guys are bad, the bad guys are good, and as for everyone in between, you really don’t know where they stand. It’s a shame that Scorsese had to wait so long for an Oscar, but I think he definitely deserved it for this movie.

1) Goodfellas – Hands down my favorite organized crime movie of all time. I think it’s just about perfect. It has an excellent cast and tells an excellent story, from beginning to end. You really get to know and like the characters, especially since you are first introduced to them when they are children. Plus, any movie that can make Layla feel so creepy gets a lot of cred in my book:



Honorable Mentions: Once Upon a Time in America, Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead, State of Grace, Eight Heads in a Duffel Bag, Made, Blow, Scarface… oh, and those Godfather. I’m only mentioning the Godfather movies because without them, the movies on my list may have never been made. I just don’t love the Godfather movies like everyone else does. I’ll probably wake up in the morning with a picture of a horse head in my inbox for saying that, but I’m just being honest.

Keep in mind this is a man who has given us such golden quotes as:
"I'm not a fucking retard like Michael Bay or other people running around in the business or Eli Roth making the same shitty movies over and over again," says Boll. "If you really look at my movies you will see my real genius you know, and if you go on May 23 on Postal you will see that I deliver a movie what nobody else delivered in the last 10 years, what is way better as all that social critic George Clooney bullshit what you get every fucking weekend."*

What's wrong with Michael Bay's films? Sure no one likes them all, but you can say that of any film maker. Hell, I love Kubrick and still hated Eyes Wide Shut. Can you say Michael Bay half asses it and does a shitty job? No. Does he actually research his subject matter and try to deliver what the fans of the content want? Yes. Transformers is one of the best examples ever of successfully making a film version of any comic, cartoon, super hero, or video game. It included all those details that you look for as a fan of a particular subject. Does Uwe Boll use storylines that have nothing to do with the source material? Yes. Is there very little content even referencing the source material? Yes. WTF?

And don't give me that major production house/money/backing/advertising crap. Uwe's movies sell themselves based on the fact that they are already popular games, and so there is a built in market of those who loved the game. Money and backing don't make or break a film either, huge productions have had horrible results while some small budget films (Desperado, anyone?) have had huge success.

In fact, Uwe Boll, you do make the same shitty movie over and over again, and I dread hearing your name when I hear of a new movie that would have potential if it didn't have your asshattery all over it.
